Poverty reduction

We are working on projects that will create jobs and also prepare and empower people to start their own businesses because we believe that this will reduce the prevalence of risky behaviors. A recent article showed that there is an increase of young women/girls in the area engaging in prostitution to provide food for their families.

We believe that working with such youth (and their parents) and educating them on other ways to provide for themselves will reduce such risky activities and the prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Current Projects

1. Seedlings

We have identified youths in the area who want to go to school but are lacking funds. Therefore, we worked together with the Ministry of Forestry to train these youth on how to raise Eucalyptus tree seedlings. There is currently a high demand for these seedlings which will eventually be used for electrical posts.

Once the seedlings are ready, they will be sold and some of the funds will be used for educational expenses while other funds will be used to continue growing more trees, thus, creating a cycle of income for the youth. They will appreciate the benefits of hard work and get educated in the process as well.

This project will also benefit the environment by reducing the concentration of Carbon dioxide in the environment. As more and more trees are planted, CO2 levels in the atmosphere will decrease, hopefully the rate of climate change will decrease as well.
