Health

Another aspect that is very important within the Marera community concerns health.

Eye Clinic

We have had several health clinics over the last few years. Some have been eye clinics where so many people received eye exams for the first time in their lives. Many received glasses and a few had to go for surgery to remove their cataracts. These patients were quite grateful to be able to see clearly again after so many years. It just showed how sometimes we take things such as eyesight for granted.

Part of the eye clinic was the administration of Vitamin A supplements. Vitamin A deficiency is one of the leading causes of childhood blindness and so it was important to provide the youth with this therapy. They and their caretakers were also educated on which kinds of foods are rich in Vitamin A, so as to prevent future cases of childhood blindness as well as improving the development of their eyes as they grow.

Deworming

We have also had deworming clinics for the children. Many of the children were treated and also educated on how to prevent future infections with worms.

Basic Health Screening

There have also been clinics where adults were examined and provided with medicines for various health conditions.

We hope to have many more of these kinds of clinics in the future, to bring medical services to people who are living in this rural area and cannot afford to

Clinical Research

We also plan on conducting clinical research on complementary and alternative therapies which have been studied scientifically and have been shown to be quite promising.
